1 Corinthians 13:1-13

“The Wedding and the Marriage”

In last week’s passage about being the body of Christ Paul promised to show us a better way.  Well, here it is: love!  This passage gets read at weddings all the time.  In fact, I’d say that 80% of the couples I’ve worked with have requested this passage.  I worry, though, that we’ve become such a wedding-focused culture (big dress, big hair, big guest list, big bills, big day), that this teaching has become just another pretty part of a pretty party, and we’ve forgotten that this understanding of love – just like the marriages that begin at weddings – requires humility, commitment, and sustained hard work. Our faith lives are like this.  It’s easy and fun to express faith as celebration and splendor, but faith also requires powerful trust and commitment.  How can our worship lives be “wedding” reminders that empower us to do the work of “marriage”?
