Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
Title: The Hero and the Human: Power and Servanthood
David is not merely crowned king, but “anointed” of God, which calls for a different kind of authority over the people- not for David’s benefit, or Israel’s superiority over the nations, but care for God’s creation and compassion toward the people. David’s anointing (and the call of our baptism) is a call in which:
(1) Even a position of authority, God’s way of power (not that of “the nations”) forms and shapes our activity
(2) That power is lived out: (a) in service to God and others, (b) faithfulness to God’s ways of power, and compassion toward others’ needs.
