Scripture:  2 Samuel 7:1-14, Ephesians 2:17-22

Title:   “The Hero and the Human:  Power and Ambition”

The reading from 2 Samuel 7 presents a tension between David’s ambition and God’s vision foe David’s reign and Israel’s role.  Even if David has the most sincere motives for wanting to build a place for the Ark, his dream of building a “house” for God risks seeing Yahweh as a tribal deity who serves at the king’s and Israel’s pleasure.  Both God’s response to David and the epistle writer’s words in Ephesians 2 remind us the primary and greater emphasis should not be on what we build for God but what God builds in and through us.
