“Who You Gonna Call?”

Times of crisis are often overwhelming.  Many things are happening.  There are important questions and seemingly unclear answers.  Tempers run hot, fears abound, and truth is hard to find.  It’s often hard to know how to decide, what to believe, what to do.  And yet, that’s precisely what’s required.  In fact, our word “crisis” is from the Greek word for “decision.”  In the aftermath of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection as the disciples are working to decide who they’ll be and what they’ll do, they experience the influx of the Holy Spirit.  Peter explains the event, in part, by quoting the prophet Joel – a text that seems frightening, at best.  The text is, however, an assurance of God’s presence and power for those who call upon the Lord, even in the worst times of crisis.
